Values Clarification and John Dewey's Theory of Valuation
Author: Wen-jing Shan
Abstract:
Values clarification, a new approach to moral education, was developed by Louis Raths and popularized by Sidney Simon. They maintained that the theoretical founda-tion of values clarification came from John Dewey's theory of valuation. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relevance that Raths and his associates maintained by comparing it with John Dewey's theory of valuation.
The study begins with a review of the setting and development of the Raths approach to values clarification. Next, John Dewey's theory of valuation is fully discussed. Moreover, the essence of these two approaches is compared. Then, a re-constituted "definition" and the definition proposed by Raths and his associates are critically compared.
