Abstract:

This study aimed at understanding primary school students' attitude change after taking a newly-designed calligraphy appreciation course. The researchers designed a set of calligraphy appreciation teaching materials suitable for primary school students in grades 5 and 6, and engaged in an experimental teaching project in order to evaluate the attitude change regarding calligraphy undergone by these students. The study had a quasi-experimental design. Specially selected subjects were divided into two groups: an experimental group and a control group. Methods used included a literature review and face-to-face interviews. The designing of the calligraphy-appreciation teaching materials employed computer graphics, and also made use of the contents of people's daily activities, for example the spring couplets, so that the materials might be more interesting to students.
The study found that the experimental group students did undergo significant and positive attitudes changes with regard to Chinese calligraphy learning. Though attitudes changes were insignificant in the control group, most of the students in this study actually showed an interest in, and fondness for, Chinese calligraphy learning.
